The Writing Revolution For years, nothing seemed capable of turning around New Dorp High School’s dismal performance—not firing bad teachers, not flashy education technology, not after-school programs. So, faced with closure, the school’s principal went all-in on a very specific curriculum reform, placing an overwhelming focus on teaching the basics of analytic writing, every day, in virtually every class. What followed was an extraordinary blossoming of student potential, across nearly every subject—one that has made New Dorp a model for educational reform. CLICK HERE TO READ THE ARTICLE |
Classroom discussion became an opportunity to push classmates to listen to each other, think more carefully, and speak more precisely, in ways they could then echo in persuasive writing. When speaking, they were required to use specific prompts outlined on a poster at the front of each class.

The Write Idea: Genres, Categories, and Ideas for Student Writing Assignments
The Common Core State Standards for writing require students to both read and write like an historian, a detective, a scientist, mathematician, journalist, and an author. Students should be writing in different genres and also in varying lengths over a period of time.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.10 Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences.
Below are some ways that students can write in all disciplines.

PEEL your Writing...
Argumentative writing is a new forum for many of our students. Citing textual evidence and supporting claims in writing is much different than writing to an isolated prompt. Are your students struggling to provide evidence and explain how the evidence supports their claim? Then have students PEEL their writing!
